Main Purpose and Function
The Operations Worker III is responsible for skilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance tasks with a specialization in chain link fence construction, playground and other recreational equipment maintenance. The duties require heavy physical effort and may involve working in hazardous conditions. Operation Worker III’s are responsible for adhering to established work and safety standards and depending on the complexity of the work required, may work under close direction, guidance and supervision.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The Operation Worker III is responsible for the construction and maintenance of metal, wood and plastic structures, components and hardware. Items typically included but are not limited to are baseball backstops, tennis courts, fences, gates, flag poles, gymnasium and playground equipment. The Operations Worker III will also be working with a variety of equipment and is responsible for maintaining shop areas and work sites.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Up to completion of high school supplemented by courses related to the work and sound related experience
- Experience in the operation of a wide variety of manual, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and gas powered tools, including motorized construction and maintenance equipment, such as, but not limited to generators, saws, pumps, scaffolding, boom lifts, scissor lifts, power augers, drills, compressors, chainsaws, rotary hammer drills, etc.
- A current and valid BC Driver’s License and a safe driving record are required. The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities.
- Local area travel and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Board of Parks and Recreation.
- Recognized ITA welding ticket an asset
- CSA Playground Inspection is an asset
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and materials used in Structures Shop including but not limited to the construction and maintenance of playgrounds, fences, gates, backstops, tennis courts, handrails, flag poles, flags, swing sets and a wide variety of pool, rink, field and gym equipment.
- Working knowledge of City of Vancouver by-laws, safety standards, Parks and C.S.A. playground standards.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and other staff.
- Ability to exercise considerable independence of judgment and initiate action for the work.
- Ability to courteously answer questions and deal with the public
- Ability to follow written (blueprints, word orders and sketches) as well as verbal instructions and maintain accurate records.
Drivers License and Record Checks
Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:
- Copy of your three-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 30 days of this posting
- Copy of your three-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 30 days of this posting
- If you have less than three years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
