This will be a hybrid work role split between your home and our office. We are open to candidates in Canada (Burnaby) or the US (Thousand Oaks, Tampa, South San Francisco)

What you will do

In this vital role you will help build innovative scientific applications with modern technology stacks that will be used by our research partners to drive Amgen's innovation in drug discovery. The candidate will join our Research Informatics team to deliver data engineering solutions for the Omics team. You will support our Research partners in designing and implementing IS solutions for Discovery, Non-Clinical & Early Development.

The Research Informatics team supports discovery research and translational sciences globally with innovative IS and Data Science solutions to accelerate and grow Amgen's pipeline of biopharmaceuticals. Our success in informatics is driven by our dedication to the IS Vision:

Responsibilities:
  • Query, manipulate, and visualize data using R, RShiny, JavaScript, CSS, and commercial data visualization tools
  • Develop bioinformatics (e.g. R Shiny) applications and relevant usage analytics
  • Develop data processing pipelines for large datasets in the cloud (AWS); integrate with other data sources where applicable
  • Collaborate with the other engineering team members to ensure all services are reliable, maintainable, and well-integrated into existing platforms
  • Adhere to best practices for testing and designing reusable code
  • Ensure effective communication between scientific area management, technical staff and vendors to analyze scientific needs and implement informatics solutions in data acquisition, integration and analysis

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in computer science or closely relevant degree program
    OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of software engineering experience
    OR
  • Associate's degree and 6 years of software engineering experience
    OR
  • High school diploma / GED and 8 years of software engineering experience
  • Demonstrated mastery of R and RShiny
  • Experience working with container technologies (e.g., Docker) and developing microservices
  • Strong learning agility, ability to pick up new technologies used to support early drug discovery data analysis needs


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Life Sciences, Computer Science or Engineering
  • Experience in developing or supporting bioinformatics, cheminformatics, laboratory automation, or other scientific applications
  • Demonstrated foundation in software design and proficiency in languages such as Java and Python
  • Strong experience working with Agile & DevOps (Jenkins, JIRA, Github) frameworks with successful experience working in a collaborative team environment
  • Experience in Cloud (AWS, databricks platforms) & HPC (high performance computing) environments
  • Experience in developing and supporting web applications including familiarity with web technologies and frameworks (EXTJS, D3 JS, React.js)
  • Data analysis and reporting experience by using analytics, visualization, and database technologies (Oracle, PL SQL, Spotfire, Tableau, Python - NumPy, SciPy, Pandas)
  • Experience processing and analyzing large NGS data
  • Expertise with translating business requirements to technical requirements and recommend solutions
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
