Would you like to be part of the Primex team that creates solutions for service providers, communications installers, and homebuilders to bring broadband connectivity to the home network? Primex is looking for a Product Designer.

The Product Designer is responsible for the design, development, procurement, and implementation of engineered solutions. You'll be expected to create, maintain, and improve new products for the telecommunications/connectivity infrastructure industry. Such examples include, Indoor Media Panels, Outdoor enclosures, Fiber Optic solutions, electrical, and other connectivity components, along with related accessories.

Reporting to the Product Design Manager, you'll be key member of the CRH/Oldcastle/Primex Engineering team and will be at the forefront of new innovative technologies designed to address connectivity problems across North America.

What you'll do:
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team, utilizing a stage-gate product development process, to bring a product from concept to commercial release.
  • Effectively use SolidWorks CAD and PDM, to develop, design, and create new engineered solutions, including artistic contributions, to address the needs of a growing telecommunications market.
  • Research new technologies, and prototype concepts, to help Primex remain at the forefront of the industry.
  • Maintain and improve product through the carrying out and oversite of the Engineering Change process (from ECR to ECO to Implementation).
  • Contribute and build-upon Primex processes and design best practices.
  • Provide documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications that demonstrate how devices, parts, equipment, or structures are to be fabricated, constructed, assembled, modified, maintained, and used by both internal and external team members.
  • Design test equipment and create test plans to validate the functionality of your product, its feature set, and its performance.

When not developing new products, you'll work to maintain and improve existing products - finding ways to reduce cost, improve performance and operational/manufacturing efficiencies. This could include:
  • Investigate product issues to diagnose root causes.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, providing a conclusion summary and recommendation to your findings that address the problem.
  • Work with production to optimize manufacturing methods including automation, assembly process, and fabrication of products.

What you'll need:
  • Strong technical ability and 4+ years relevant product development and hands-on work experience with physically manufactured product(s). Being an accredited PEng or EIT will be considered an asset.
  • You have an academic background, bachelor's degree or technical diploma, in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or related field
  • A pro-active self-sufficient individual with a passion for excellent product and continuous improvement as well as a keen attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a cross-functional team in a fast-paced product development environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills along with excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in 3D modeling and PDM, preferably with Solidworks
  • Demonstrated ability to understand regulatory code and achieve product compliance.
  • Knowledge of plastic injection part design
  • Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:
    • Familiarity with impact testing and water ingress testing
    • Knowledge of the TELCO, FTTH, and fiber optics industries
    • Knowledge of fiber optics best practices
    • Knowledge of sheet metal design and fabrication
    • Smart home connectivity and networking
    • Broadband network design and deployment
    • Plastic injection mold design
    • Rendering
    • Simulation (FEM & CFM) and thermal analysis
    • FMEA, Tolerance stack analysis, DFMA
    • Lean Manufacturing
