We are seeking a Battery Engineer to join our lean and agile team in our Burnaby facility. This role reports to the Manager, High-Voltage Battery and is responsible for to design, innovate, and assist in the production of unique electric vehicles that provide a safe, reliable, and exceptional driving experience to the consumer.

Engineering Department - Powertrain and Energy Storage
  • Design, implement and test cutting-edge algorithms for run-time BMS logic to derive State-of-Charge, State-of-Health, State-of-Power and State-of-Energy computations
  • Review development of software code with supplier to meet company BMS requirements.
  • Analyze the laboratory and operating test data to determine performance and life characteristics of the electric vehicle batteries
  • Develop simulation models of the cells and packs to investigate battery performance, thermal management, and state-of-health
  • Develop hardware design documentation including design capability, circuit analysis, interface resources for software, FMEAs, safety critical design, design to requirement traceability
  • Develop control strategies to optimize battery performance and life
  • Support development of control algorithms and new features/functionsCollaborate on concept development of new battery packs and implementation of novel cell and control technologies
  • Maintain awareness of the battery technology status and advise on future battery development directions
  • Liaise with key suppliers to resolve open issues and participate in new products development
  • Work cross-functionally within the company and with battery safety organizations and vendors.
  • Carry out battery system development cycle from concepts to fully validated production designs.

Engineering Department - Specifications
  • Ensure product conforms to all market regulations, and identifies that regulations are subject to constant change.
  • Orchestrates and executes proof of concept validation tests to ensure vehicle specifications are met.
  • Adjusts to rapidly changing industry regulations and brings an agile outlook to designing vehicles that meet those regulations.
  • Collaborates with key suppliers and supports overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events.
  • Understands and effectively uses company systems, such as ERP inventory management.
  • Collaborates with other engineering functions to conduct trend analysis and complete company projects.
  • Collaborate with company engineering group on Functional Safety (ISO-26262) activities.

General Requirements

  • Collaborates with key suppliers and supports overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events.
  • Understands and effectively uses company systems, such as ERP inventory management.
  • Collaborates with other engineering functions to conduct trend analysis and complete company projects.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering discipline (ME or EE preferred)
  • Experience with automotive battery design is considered an asset
  • Experience with modeling lithium ion cells and simulating models of electrical systems.
  • Basic experience, understanding, and intuition for the electrochemical physics of lithium ion cells.
  • Understanding of Battery management systems (BMS) and associated software.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools like Matlab or Simulink would be an asset.
  • Team player - expresses desire to work in teams and values perspective of other team members.
  • Computer literacy - including using company specific systems as required.
  • Creative and innovative mindset towards developing procedures.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Abides by Health & Safety standards (organizational and vehicle).
  • Legally able to work in Canada.
