Job Description

Type of employment: Permanent
Reporting to: Laboratory Supervisor
  • Perform a variety of decomposition and leaching methods as per SGS' Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). These will include acid digests, selective leaches, fusions and others as required
  • Calibrate, operate and maintain analytical instruments including ISE. Perform classical analytical methods as required and verify results
  • Make basic reagents as necessary
  • Provides feedback to supervisors and/or group leader regarding any issues encountered during procedures. E.g. unanticipated reactions, loss of samples
  • Assist Chemists and Supervisors with method development and validations and provide feedback on results
  • Verify and adjust calibrations on a variety of lab equipment including dispensers, pipettes, balances and other.
  • Ensure that work order documentation is complete in every respect and QC results are entered into SLIMS as necessary.
  • Maintain clean and organized workbench area ensuring spills are immediately cleaned; disposal is handled according to laboratory procedures including any special requirements for handling international soils.
  • Clean labware as required
  • Ensure that equipment's are maintained in good order making the supervisor or group leader aware of any damaged or defective equipment or any equipment requiring complex adjustment.
  • Notify supervisor when consumables are nearing depletion to ensure they are reordered. Assist in procurement of consumables and other laboratory items as required
  • Keep all records and notebooks in good order including work order and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Adhere to assigned working hours unless otherwise approved by the Supervisor
  • May be asked to work in other areas of the Geochemistry laboratory sections when required.

  • Education: Degree or diploma (or equivalent) in Chemistry related field is preferred.
  • Experience: 2-5 years of relevant work experience required or equivalent experience through education. Must have previous work experience working in an inorganic lab setting
  • Must be able to work a rotating shift schedule (Days and Nights- 12 hour shifts)
  • Strong analytical and mechanical skills
  • Good hand/eye coordination when handling samples & lab equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine bench tests
  • A willingness to learn new analytical tests, instrumentation and procedures
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Candidates must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Must use good judgment to identify and resolve problems on the job. When in difficulty refer problems to his/her supervisor for resolution.
  • Intermediate level of creativity required in solving routine problems.
  • Proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
